ART CLAY COPPER - FAST FIRING, TORCH-ABLE!
This is the newest addition to the Art Clay line of metal clay products. Art Clay Copper only requires a 30 minute kiln firing time and, best of all - you don't need to use any activated carbon or a firing pan! You can even fire it with a torch!

Simply put into a hot kiln and fire at 970C for 30 minutes, and then remove the hot piece and quench in water. This will remove the firescale created during firing. For heavy firescale you need to immerse the piece in pickle.

Shrinkage 9-10%.

The copper clay comes in 50gm. For detailed instructions, please click here.

COPPRCLAY

Differences between COPPRclay™ and BRONZclay™ -
Obviously the colour - COPPRclay has a lovely subtle copper colour, whilst the BRONZclay has a warm golden bronze.
COPPRclay is easier to work with as it sticks better to itself.
The COPPRclay firing schedule is simpler.
COPPRclay can only be fired in Coconut Shell Activated carbon. Both clays require firing in a kiln.

The copper clay comes in packs of 100 or 200gm. For an instruction sheet, please click here.

BRONZCLAY

BRONZclay™ consists of 11% tin, 89% copper, water and non-toxic binding materials. The binding materials vaporize completely during the kiln-firing process, leaving a solid bronze piece with a density 90% that of cast bronze. For an instruction booklet, please click here. Must be fired in a kiln.

Commercial Bronze vs. BRONZclay™ -
BRONZclay™ is true bronze and is composed of tin and copper,
not the brass form that you see in most commercial bronze.
This composition gives it a beautiful subtle warm gold colour,
which a lot of people compare to the look of 9ct yellow gold.

The bronze clay comes in packs of 100 or 200gm.

GLOVES IN A BOTTLE

One difference between BRONZ/COPPRclay and silver clay, is that the base metal clay can really stain your nails and skin. Gloves in a Bottle is a great way of avoiding this. Apply a small amount before you start working, especially under your nails, and your skin will be as if covered by a invisible (and un-feelable!) glove. Re-apply every four hours.

Gloves in a Bottle is also fantastic if you suffer from dry sensitive skin, eczema, dermatitis, or psoriasis. It acts as a shielding lotion, so keeps "bad things" out, and good things (like moisture) in - perfect when gardening. It is unscented, non-greasy, non-sticky, and super-light so you won't feel it on your skin.

FIRING PANS

Bronzeclay waiting to be firedBRONZ and COPPRClay can only be fired in a kiln, buried in activated carbon. This is due to the copper in the material. Copper oxidises when heated and exposed to oxygen (this is why sterling silver goes black when heated, and needs pickling), so we create a oxygen starved environment by burying it in carbon.

You need to contain the carbon in a stainless steel pan which can survive heat for a long period, without breaking down. Containers made from ceramic fibre blocks, glass, ceramics, or heat sensitive metals, like aluminum, will not work.

This pan will fit the Paragon SC2 kiln. It is 176mm x 162mm and 100mm high, and comes with a lid. 1 litre of carbon would fill this pan. Ideally, place the pan on posts to allow the heat to circulate around it.
This will NOT fit a mini kiln (Prometheus Kiln).

ACTIVATED CARBON - CHARCOAL AND COCONUT SHELL BASED

The activated carbon is used to create a oxygen reduced environment, allowing the BRONZclay and COPPRclay to sinter. It can be re-used over and over until it breaks down. You might need to top it up a little after many firings, as small amounts will burn during the firing and turn into dust. This is a very slow process, and it will be a visible breakdown so you'll know when you need to get new carbon.
The coconut shell–based carbon produces a bronze colour with the occasional light patina; the coal-based carbon produces a colourful intense range of patinas on the BRONZclay. The patina you get differs from firing to firing, and where (and how) you place your piece in the firing pan.

Please note that the copper clay must be fired in coconut shell based carbon only!

The carbon comes in a strong plastic 1 litre storage tub with a re-sealable lid.
